Don’t Go to Your Grave With the Music Still In You!

“Don’t go to your grave with the music still in you” was a saying I heard from Bob Proctor (The Secret) many years ago and it has resonated with me ever since. So what does it mean? It means, don’t go to your grave:

  • Without writing that book you’ve always wanted to write
  • Without taking that trip of a lifetime you’ve planned for years
  • Without telling the people you love how much you really care about them
  • Without finishing the many projects you’ve started and never completed
  • Without completing your goals

I think you get the picture! How many times have you heard people say, “as soon as I retire I’m going to travel the world”. The sad fact is that many people reach retirement age and die shortly after and don’t live to fulfil their dream.

So what if you don’t have enough money to travel when you’re younger? If the goal is big enough and you’re prepared to do whatever it takes to achieve it, you will find the money.

Many people believe that once they retire they will have all the time in the world and put off projects until then.

Wouldn’t it be better to travel or do whatever you’ve dreamed about before it’s too late? Choosing to live your life day by day is a far better option than saving it all up until you “have time”. The trouble is your time runs out.

To fulfil your lifetime goals, set yourself small ones every day so that you get into the habit of setting and achieving goals. It makes it so much easier to set a big goal and then take the action needed to achieve it.

Setting a big goal is exciting and exhilarating and is enormously satisfying once you’ve achieved it. Don’t set yourself a goal without having some idea of how it will pan out. You need a plan, much like a road map, of what you have to do along the way to get there. Whatever you do, don’t give up!

There’s nothing worse than going to a relative or friend’s funeral knowing that they hadn’t achieved what they’d set out to do with their life. Don’t go to your grave with the music still in you! Live each and every day as if it’s your last!

Aim for Success

Thinking and acting in a positive manner is part of training yourself to feel and believe you are positive in your approach to things, and that you are going to be successful. It is a self fulfilling prophecy! However it only works if you make it work!

First of all, you do need to plan things. First, you need to plan out your long term goals. Decide where you want to be, and then you need to decide on your strategy and have an action plan with target achievements and target dates. This plan needs to be a visible part of your life every day. Every morning you need to review your goals, and review how you are going to achieve them.

Everyday you need to have at least one thing to achieve that takes you nearer to your long term goal. If you fail to keep sight of your goals, you won’t get to achieve them.

A way of helping you believe in yourself and in reaching your goals, is to visualize yourself in the position you hope to achieve. For example, you can, in your mind, see yourself in the boardroom, or receiving that longed for award, or sailing that fabulous boat in wonderful warm blue seas. You can see yourself living in that wonderful penthouse, with a huge terrace, wonderful views and a hot tub. Or maybe you see yourself as an acclaimed musician, golfer, or artist. It doesn’t matter what your dream is – what matters is that you work at achieving it.

Make the absolute most of your time. If you let your emotional fear hold you up, you will put off starting the things you need to do. And if you start, you will prevaricate and find distractions – anything to avoid actually doing what you need to do. This is something you have to overcome to be successful.

Acknowledge the fear, and work out short periods of time to do at least a part of a task. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted. Ensure you have peace and quiet, and make sure you take your water or coffee with you. This way you won’t be tempted to just ‘put the kettle on while thinking of task A’, and won’t just wander off to the fridge when you should be concentrating on task B’.

Students particularly suffer from the procrastination syndrome. It’s easy to say ‘oh well, I work much better under pressure’, but, in fact, it’s rarely true, and most people just make life harder by putting off the moment. So learn to work to the plan, live with the plan, and see the plan as your route to success. Don’t treat it as an enemy – actually it is your best friend.

Make sure your plan allows time for you to think about where you want to go, and why. Thinking about your future is a good way to keep your goals in sight, and to adapt them if need be. It is worth dreaming a little about how it will feel when you achieve your goals.

Make sure your goals are not too easy, or way too difficult. The long term goals may be a real stretch, and you know you have to work on progress in a realistic manner. So set your interim goals, but review them on a regular basis. Your ‘next’ goal should always be just a little bit harder than you think you can manage. Always ensure you have to aim a tad higher than you think you can reasonably to get to at each stage.

Review your progress and goals at appropriate times. Build in your reviews to your critical path. Yes, you should have a critical path plan. That way, you can save time instead of constantly thinking about what you should do next. The plan should show each task in a format that tracks the sequence of your goals and tasks. A critical path also enables you to build in flexibility and potential for change. It doesn’t mean you are absolutely tied to each goal, each date and each vision. It should enable you to see how well you are doing at meeting your targets, though.

You can build almost anything into your critical path. If you need to get your diet right, then you can build in targets for reducing your dependence on sugary foods. You can have a target date for stopping smoking and weaning yourself off that bad old nicotine. You can build in the need on a regular basis to examine your attitudes, feelings and self esteem.

Without a Struggle There Can Be No Progress

“Without a struggle there can be no progress” are words written in 1818 by Frederick Douglass.

Abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Talbot County, Maryland. He became one of the most famous intellectuals of his time, advising presidents and lecturing to thousands on a range of causes, including women’s rights and Irish home rule. Among Douglass’ writings are several autobiographies eloquently describing his experiences in slavery and his life after the Civil War. bio.

Those simple words encapsulate a life full of struggle but he had the will to not let his circumstances sway him from what he wanted to achieve.

He proved that anything you want in your life is there for the taking, but it’s up to you whether or not you reach out and grab it.

His words inspire me to keep on struggling through the challenges which are constantly being thrown at me in my personal and business life, and the biggest message of all is to not think of ourselves as being failures if our project doesn’t work out. His message is to keep getting back up and facing the challenges head on.

If Frederick Douglass can make a success in his life after being born into slavery, then it should be a “walk in the park” for us.

My goal is to keep focusing on what I want and despite the struggle I’ll keep forging ahead!

Do You Work from Home?

Working from home is great isn’t it? You don’t have to get up early and spend a good part of your day stuck in traffic! You don’t have someone constantly leaning over your shoulder watching what you’re doing! You don’t spend all day watching the clock so that you can once again join the throngs of commuters on their way home!

Sounds great doesn’t it? Well it is great but you have to be very well disciplined. If you work at home and you have children, it can be really hard to ignore them while you’re trying to write an article or an ebook. You have to be able to separate your work and leisure time so that neither misses out.

If your children are very young, you could work while they’re having a nap and then plan to work in the evening when they’re in bed. Toddlers want a lot of attention! In this case it may be easier to plan your working hours in the evening allowing you time to spend with your children during the day.

Many of us work from home and don’t have issues with children being around, but that does not mean you won’t be distracted. Pick a room in your home that you can call your “office” and treat it as such. You don’t have to work 9 to 5 but if you have set yourself tasks for the day, make sure you complete them. It can be very easy to work all sorts of hours when you work from home, but don’t fall into the trap and allow yourself time for relaxation.

If you’re like me, I spend many hours during the week and the weekends working on my business, but I take time out for myself whenever I feel like it. I love what I do and I don’t consider it work anyway, but I know that I do need to have a break. Taking a break also allows your mind to wander and you may just come up with the bright idea you were looking for!

Working from home gives me the freedom to work at my own pace and if need be I just have to pack up my laptop and take it with me wherever I go. If I want to work at the beach or in a favorite spot I can do it easily.

Why Do We Procrastinate?

This is a very pertinent question for all of us. I have found that the majority of us procrastinate one way or another.
The reason for this topic is because I’d attended a women’s network meeting and this question was raised by the presenter. It really got me thinking about how I procrastinate over simple things and it always works out that the task I put off takes twice as long to complete!

There are things you can do to avoid procrastination and here’s just a few ideas.

  • Set a task for the day and stick with it until you have completely finished it. I’m mainly talking about big projects which we put off and tell ourselves we’ll get back to it later. The problem is later never comes!
  • Focus on the result you want and concentrate on those areas to complete your task
  • Make preparations to complete your project beforehand. Don’t leave it to the last minute to organize yourself. Tell everyone a day or two before that you will not answer your phones or emails until the task is completed
  • There is never enough time to complete absolutely everything, so don’t beat yourself up it they aren’t all done
  • Work out the key points of your project and handle one topic at a time. If you try to do too much at once you’ll give up and once again it won’t be completed
  • Do the most difficult task first so that the other components don’t seem so bad. Stay at it until it is finished!

The key to overcoming procrastination is knowing that you are procrastinating and then doing something about it. Once you’ve mastered procrastination you’ll be amazed at how quickly your tasks are completed.

Will You Be the Next Successful Entrepreneur?

I’ve often wondered what you’d have to do to become “rich and successful”, and my observation is that you either have to work very hard to get where you want to be, or be suddenly discovered as the next great model or actor, or win Lotto!

People like Bill Gates, Donald Trump and Warren Buffet didn’t become “rich and successful” overnight. They had to work extremely hard and had to spend long hours honing their businesses. To them their business is their life and they put all their energies into making it successful.

Being discovered as the next top model on the other hand doesn’t seem to take as much effort. If you’ve got the right look at the right time, then promoting yourself will be taken care of by the agency which signed you up. Spending a few days at a time on a photo shoot, or strutting your stuff on a catwalk, doesn’t even come close to the hard work put in by entrepreneurs.

If you are discovered as the next big actor, you spend a minimum of 2-3 months a year filming a movie, and once it’s completed you have the terrible task of going around the world to promote it! Many of us would like to think that we could be the next big movie star, but it takes talent and perseverance to make it.

If you want to be the next person to become “rich and successful” by winning Lotto, don’t waste your time. It may never happen.

Maybe you’ve got an idea for a great project but are fearful that it won’t work. Are you willing to step out of your comfort zone and risk taking the chance that it may actually work? What if it does fail?

Napoleon Hill said, “Before success comes in any man’s life, he’s sure to meet with much temporary defeat and, perhaps some failures. When defeat overtakes a man, the easiest and the most logical thing to do is to quit. That’s exactly what the majority of men do”.

Will you quit too or will you work hard and strive to be the next “rich and successful” entrepreneur?

Shake It Off and Step Up!

One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out a way to get him out. Finally he decided it was probably impossible and the animal was old and the well was dry anyway, so it just wasn’t worth it to try and retrieve the donkey. So the farmer asked his neighbours to come over and help him cover up the well. They all grabbed shovels and began to shovel dirt into the well.

At first, when the donkey realized what was happening he cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement, he quieted down and let out some happy brays. A few shovel loads later, the farmer looked down the well to see what was happening and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was shaking it off and taking a step up.

As the farmer’s neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he continued to shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, to everyone’s amazement, the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off.

The moral of this tale is: Life is going to shovel dirt on you. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Through applying wisdom every adversity can be turned into a stepping stone. The way to get out of the deepest well is by never giving up but by shaking yourself off and taking a step up.

The moral is what happens to you isn’t nearly as important as how you react to it.

Do You Have Goals and Aspirations?

We hear it asked constantly, usually by Internet Gurus or some of the top people in the Self Development industry, yet many of us wander aimlessly through life without a goal in sight. Without a goal or something to aim at, we’re on a path to nowhere.

Never quit. It is the easiest cop-out in the world. Set a goal and don’t quit until you attain it. When you do attain it, set another goal, and don’t quit until you reach it. Never quit.  Bear Bryant

Many of us have a list of goals we want to achieve and we write them down or we put an image board together and then do nothing to try and reach our goal.

If you decided you wanted to build a new house, you couldn’t do it without planning what you’re going to do. First you have to find the right block of land and then look for house plans which suit your needs and your budget. This is your goal! You’ve probably thought about where you’d like to live and where you should build your dream home. You must take action to find what you need.

Do you aspire to be like someone or are you happy as you are? Many of us look up to people we admire for their achievements and successes, whereas others aspire to become a celebrity and be constantly in the public eye. It really doesn’t matter what you aspire to be as long as you want to better yourself and make yourself happy.

Too many people want to be something they’re not and are bitterly disappointed when they don’t succeed. Be happy in your own skin and be the individual that you are.

Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead.  Louisa May Alcott

Don’t spend your whole life without having a goal in mind. It’s a bit like getting in your car and driving and not knowing where to go! We’re all on a journey through life together and if we have something amazing to aim at, it will inspire us to jump out of bed everyday and reach it.

What is your goal?

What is the Meaning of Success?

Is it persevering with the job at hand to achieve your final outcome?  Is it about commitment or integrity?  Is it about putting your heart and soul into a project?  Then again, is success reliant on who you know to help with reaching your goal? Success means different things to different people, that much I do know.

When you read of successful people one tends to  think they must have had it easy on their way to the top.  You’ll often hear “It’s who they know” or “Luck went their way” but that’s not often the case at all. Sure, some people are born with the silver spoon and get everything handed to them but surprisingly a lot of successful people do not.

Often it’s the people who are not the most educated, the show off, disruptive kid at school or those coming from the wrong side of the tracks that become the most successful. You know, the rags to riches stories, and don’t we just love them.  Possibly because we can relate to their humble beginnings all the while thinking, could that be me and could I do that too?

What then, makes them successful?

What keeps them going when time and time again they see no results, or very little for the effort they are putting in.  When they have exhausted their funds and no doubt some friends along the way…what does keep them going?
I believe they have a Dream. They have the intestinal fortitude to keep that dream alive.  A burning desire to advance to a better position in life.

They always remember why they got started in the first place. Who they are doing this for and what they expect the final outcome to be. How much better off their lives and others will be with their successful outcome.  Following their dreams, keeping that spirit alive is all part of being successful.

Naturally, getting started in the first place is just the beginning.  Making that commitment to keep on keeping on, no matter what circumstances come along.  After all we know that life can throw some spanners in the works, that’s for sure.

Spend plenty of time surrounding yourself with people of the same mindset. Gain knowledge by watching videos, going to conferences, and creating empowering networks.

Never give up or give in. Keep believing and committed to the job in hand and success will happen for you too.

Too Much of a Good Thing Can be Wonderful

Why It’s Great to Have a Business Buddy!

If you work from home like the majority of us, it’s great having someone to talk to sometimes rather than sitting all day in front of a computer on your own. The option is to find someone who has the same mindset as yourself and seeking to achieve everything that life has to offer, providing you take “action”.

It is rare to find a business partner who is selfless. If you are lucky it happens once in a lifetime.
Michael Eisner

My “Business Buddy” and I live an hour apart, and while we chat via Skype or talk on the phone, it isn’t the same as being with each other to discuss things. When you’re on the phone or sending messages to each other, there’s a lot of stuff you invariably forget to mention, so being face-to-face for a few hours is the ideal situation.

Do you know how much you can achieve when you spend a few hours together brainstorming? We got together yesterday because we are developing a product so we spent time working on a MindMap which puts everything you can think of in one place and gives you a picture of what you think should go into the product.

We came up with so many ideas that we would not have come up with individually, and then worked out which tasks we were going to handle separately. There’s nothing better than bouncing ideas off each other and seeing the product taking shape in front of your eyes. It’s exciting!

You may feel that working with someone else will diminish your feeling of accomplishment, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. My “Business Buddy” and I have similar ideas about what we want to do with this product and future ones, and if we don’t always agree with each other’s interpretation, then I am sure we will work together to resolve any issues that may arise.

Our goal is to develop a product that people want and need, and by sharing our ideas together, it makes it so much easier to define what we really want. You know that old saying, “two heads are better than one?”, then that is exactly the way we both feel about our projects.

We have made a commitment to each other to work together and build our business. We want success from our achievements, and even though we both know there’s a lot of work to be done, it makes it so much easier if you can share the load with someone else. Sometimes it’s hard to work alone and not have anyone to share thoughts, ideas and feelings with. This is why we chose a “Business Buddy” so that we can work on the many products we have in mind. Stay tuned!
